Piazzeta dell’arte is an Urban project located in Oleggio Castello, Italy. The design responds to the desire to create a blend between a traditional Italian piazza and a small urban park. Doing so, by respecting the main elements of Italian piazzas, but using a contemporary language; representing a new era for Ollegio Castello.
Identity is an essential part of the design. It speaks to the idea of not only giving the residents of Oleggio Castello a space that allows for the ever-changing needs of the piazza and those who will use it, but that also belongs to the language of the surrounding context. Based on this principal, the design emerges from the existing paving geometry that can be seen all other town, transforming it into three main elements: a bench, a planter or a patch of grass.
In an effort to respect the history of this site, the design preserves the large rocks, as well as the remaining party walls. The rocks from the current site are kept and moved to informal areas, called ‘Area Naturale’, which have a denser quantity of the patches of grass and larger plants. A cable structure is added to the existing wall, allowing for vines to grow and create a beautiful natural backdrop.
This project was presented as part of the Proggeto Comune campaign proposals for the city.
